To see such a #mountain #range protruding from the #ocean is still mind boggling. The cause of this drastic uplift of the #chugach #mountains is a thick, buoyant chunk of land at the base of the pacific plate called an oceanic plateau. As the oceanic plate subducts under the continental North American plate, sediment is scraped off the top of the subducting oceanic plate, and an accretionary(accumulation) wedge builds on the continental plate margin. When the plateau reaches the trench, it can not subduct easily and collides with, and wedges beneath the continental margin. This collision/friction causes the process of subduction to slow down and causes deformity of the land mass on the continental plate resulting in an uplift of a new mountain range!
